The cold war between the US and Russia gave birth to Arpanet or Internet — as we call it today — in the 1950s. However, public gained access to Internet only in the 1980s and it became popular a decade later. With the evolution of the Internet, access to every type of information around the world was at the fingertips. Dating too was revolutionized by the Internet as the cyberspace became the meeting place for guys and girls.

Newsgroups were the predecessors of internet dating and chatting sites. Netnews (Google news as we call it today) had an interesting text-based discussion forum where people used to share their thoughts and views. The late 1980s had a news group called soc.singles where single people used to gather, and exchange their views, express their thoughts, and just about everything. The popularity of this site gave rise to rival newsgroups such as soc.women, soc.men and others who had the same motive — to help people exchange their thoughts and ideas.

The earliest predecessor of Internet dating and romance was alt.romance, a news group which was dedicated completely to dating and romance for singles.

The popularity of modern day online dating services grew rapidly. Online chatting emerged in the year 2005. Through live chat men and women could easily get to know each other before meeting. People began to realize the value of posting their profiles and photos to online dating sites. Finding love was never so easy in a life where you are always on the run trying to compete with others. People easily found love with the help of graphical dating sites like Friendfinder.com, or match .com. Today, online dating sites have become a social hobby among singles and married people.
