Lessons Of Online Dating And Chat Australian Style
The remaining 20% of Australian online dating sites on the world wide web are 100% free with these sites earning revenue through Google’s cost per click Adsense programmes. Ironically, the free dating sites also earn commissions by referring their customers to subscription based online dating sites.
Similar to the U.S market, there are the main players and the smaller players. The three main Australian online dating sites are rsvp, yahoo personals and Aussiematchmaker representing around 30% of the entire Australian market. Having said this, new dating site oasis active has grown at a fur nominal pace within ten months of their website going live and is now the second fastest growing dating site in Australia behind rsvp. oasis active has around 15,000 unique visitors daily and averages 40,000 active members daily. Oasis active recently partnered with another well known dating site hookmeup. Hookmeup has assisted oasis active in their launch in an un-disclosed deal.
Hookmeup is a free online dating site offering chat rooms, private chat, and singles personals on their dating site. Australian singles are logging onto dating sites and chat rooms at a rate of 2 million times per month. The online dating industry in Australia is one of the few industries set to benefit from the current economic down turn. Since Christmas 2008 compared to the same period in 2007 there has been a 25% upward spike in online dating and chat room traffic.
Some feedback to analyze this data includes singles prioritizing their lives and searching for security and comfort in a life partner. There is also much to be said by Australians about the comparison of social network sites and online dating chat sites.
In a recent article compilied by an author for hookmeup there are some interesting points that clearly give merit to the existence of both services. Generally speaking, it was determined that social networking is mostly used as a referral system linking old friends. Nearly 50% of Face Books 90 million members were not single. With online dating singles and chat rooms, members basically have an open ended invitation to be forward and suggestive to other members with meeting someone for a romantic or sexual connection clearly being on the agenda.

Online Dating Research Update – Hookmeup & La Trobe University
Well, some of the interim results are in and we’d like to share them with you.
Professor Pranee Liamputtong says:
It’s interesting, when we compare these early project findings to some similar research we did five years ago, you can see a real change in how and why people are using online dating. Five years ago online dating was less common and a lot of people felt some stigma around using it, whereas now it’s much more the norm. Many participants are reporting that this is one of the most common ways they and their friends meet people.
So what are people using online dating for? Participants so far have shared a variety of reasons. It seems most people seem to be using online dating to seek out a long term partner. But that’s not to say sex doesn’t feature. For some people online dating still offers an opportunity to explore their sexuality; such as allowing people to try different sexual behaviours or to explore their sexual orientation. As one participant who uses online dating as with her partner summed up “meet people and maybe have sum fun, make friends”.
Online dating also offers a great way for people to widen their networks allowing you to meet people that you wouldn’t otherwise and it can all be done when you’re comfortable at home. One participant noted that she liked online dating because it “enabling me to meet someone who I shared interests with – without having the hassle of trying to have a conversation in some noisy bar or pub where all of the guys mates are watching his every move”.
Of course everyone has some method of screening their potential dates. The most obvious are by looks and personality as they are displayed initially through a profile and then through chat, email and phone calls. But how else are our fellow online daters screening their potential hook ups?
Increasingly people are using an array of online methods to screen their dating prospects. Some people like to look for consistency between what a person writes on their profile and what they type in chat. Some people like to use webcam as it helps them read body language and expressions to assess sincerity and honesty. And now with the rise of social networking sites, a number of online daters will check out their prospective dates MySpace or Facebook pages to see if everything adds up and matches what they already been told and the photos they’ve already seen.
So does this all sound similar or different to your own online dating experiences? If you’d like to be part of this project and share your thoughts, experiences and opinions about online dating then just add onlinedating@latrobe.edu.au to your messenger or visit the project webpage to find out more.

Tell Us Your Singles & Online Dating Experiences, Strategies and Insights
This project grew out of a smaller study conducted by one of the researchers, Danielle Couch, when she was studying and using online dating herself:
‘I’d used various online dating sites to meet people and had my own little processes for making my way through the online dating world. I’d send a wink or a kiss, maybe we’d correspond via a few emails or chat online for a while. Then if we decided to meet face to face I’d want to think about when and where that would be. I started wondering if other people followed the same kind of routine or did they do things differently. So I started developing a research idea.
The outcome of Danielle’s ponderings was a small research project as part of her post-graduate studies. She interviewed 15 people online, using chat. In the interviews the participants chatted online about their own online dating experiences, what they did and didn’t do to manage risk, how many people they’d met, how many people they’d had sex with through online dating, did they take safety precautions, were they into safe sex and how did it all compare to meeting people in other ways.
Working in public health, I knew there’d been some research in the US looking at the relationship between online dating and the spread of sexually transmitted infections – how the internet can let you meet people quickly and how it could be an efficient way to access casual sex partners and potentially spread infection. I wondered was this relevant in Australia? Did other online daters think about this stuff? Was it any different to going out and picking someone up in a bar on the weekend?’
The interviews ranged from 30 minutes to 3 hours in duration, depending on what each person wanted to share and what else they were doing at the time.
One of the things about interviewing people online is that you have to recognise they’re probably multi-tasking. We all do it when we’re online. So I knew when I was chatting with people I was one of several things they might be doing – that’s just the reality of being online. I had one memorable interview where a participant was in four other dating related chats and also watching some sexually explicit webcam action. I remember her apologising to me at one stage as she was a bit slow in responding to one of my questions as she was getting distracted by the web-cam show.
The general consensus was the people interviewed enjoyed the process; in fact several interviewees would often update Danielle via chat on their most recent experiences as they wanted these included in the project.
The findings from this earlier study have led to the current project. Over the next few months the researchers are looking to interview between 30 and 40 people via chat about their online dating experiences. If you’d like to be part of this project and share your thoughts, experiences and opinions about online dating then just add onlinedating@latrobe.edu.au to your messenger or visit project webpage to find out more. All interviews will be confidential.

How Do Singles Know Which Online Dating Sites To Trust?
Dating sites that bombard you with emails from other “so called” members the minute you register are best avoided. Chat room pop ups and the like are a distinct sign of a dodgy dating site. Try not to let yourself be drawn in with such tactics. Misrepresentations are extremely common in the dating industry. In a recent lawsuit, a Scotts-dale dating service agreed to pay $500,000 in restitution and fines settling a lawsuit filed by the State Attorney General. The Scots-dale dating service engaged sales tactics and misrepresentations to sell over priced memberships.
Other alarming research states that around 50% of people tell lies on their online dating profile. What these people hope to achieve by this tactic is extremely short sighted as real life meetings will always uncover the truth which is seeing more and more genuine singles losing faith with their online dating experiences.
There is no way that anyone in their right mind would fork out a $50.00 subscription for an online dating membership to a new and unknown dating site when there are several tried and trusted dating sites with 100s of 1000s of singles on their database.
Out of the sixty new dating sites launched each week, it is thought that around only 5% will have any sort of success. So the only thing accomplished by this daily influx of free online dating sites is that the consumer is left disillusioned, frustrated and disappointed with the whole selection process. To find the dating site that is the real deal always go for one that has a huge database and that is well known.
A few recommendations are eHarmony, match, rsvp, cupid & hookmeup. Remember, the large dating sites are successful because they have poured millions of dollars into promoting their sites and they need your subscriptions to stay in business and to continue offering singles legitimate online dating services. U.S based dating site match spent over 100 million dollars in advertising last year. A new dating site can be designed and launched for a few hundred dollars. Which of these dating sites do you think will bring you the best results?

What man drought? Singles online dating sites are raining men!
Night life as we know it has turned into a pit of late nights fuelled by alcohol, drugs, violence, bad attitudes and deceit. Wine bars are often frequented by married men looking for something on the side. The local pubs are often full of just men and very intimidating for a couple of single girls wanting to come inside for a few quiet drinks without having to put up with dozens of drunks gurgling at them through their beer goggles. Night clubs are fine if its just to pick up for the night, but for locating a long term sincere boyfriend, your chances are pretty slim.
Other issues singles of both sexes often vent is that when they hit their late 20s and early 30s, meeting a new partner through friends becomes increasingly hard as this age group typically moves away from the singles scene and into married life.
Through researching this dilemma single women face in today’s society, it was truly staggering to come across the amount of intelligent and beautiful single women who could not find a man worthy of a relationship.
Online is where they are! Women using online dating sites are spoilt for choice with eligible sincere men. A common complaint by many single men online was that the competition was very tough.
Whilst the numbers of single men compared to single women online are roughly the same, the etiquette seems to be that the women posts her profile and waits for the offers to just roll in from the guys. So the girls usually don’t even have to do alot. Its pretty much just a matter of sitting down for half an hour each day and clearing your inbox of the unwanted advances and making a short list. Yep its that easy. Just make sure you pay attention to posting a profile that has some sort of appeal – perhaps a fun photo or a catchy opening headline.
If you haven’t ever entertained the idea of joining an online dating site, then be prepared to stay single for some time yet. There are millions of male singles online to chat to. You don’t even need to leave your house!
The online dating industry is massive on a global scale. Many dating sites are 100% free of any cost to their members. You can meet single guys in free online chat rooms before meeting them in person.
